South East LA Artwalk

HNDP.LA and SelaCo in the City of Bell - 8/2/14

Posted by HNDP Blog Team on November 8th, 2014

On August 2nd 2014 - HNDP Participated in The South East LA Art Walk. This was our first time in the city of Bell, but as it turns out, not our last for the summer (but we'll get to that later) .

We first heard of the opportunity when our board member Omar Ramirez told us he would be there doing workshops as a part of his work with organization MALDEF. He was the first person we bumped into at the Art Walk and was silk screening posters with students. Each participant received a freshly printed poster that said in bold letters " I am accountable for my own goals" and below Omar instructed students to stamp their thumb print and to inscribe their dreams in pen. There were dozens of posters hanging to dry in Omar's booth and were many more dreams and goals amongst the crowd.

Sela Collective was the organization behind organizing the Art Walk and we were happy to find we could apply to join the event online (score for using good tech @selaco). After not long we received a reply from Jackie and we gladly accepted our invitation to join. We decided what we would cook up for the day was a crash course in music production using mobile devices.

I get a call and the HNDP crew says "meet us by the space car with the DJ". With out skipping a beat, I find parking and walk up to this guy:

Our group for the day - co-founders Aaron and William + HNDP apprentice Bosco Maltez. Who is Bosco?

Bosco is an artist, organizer, mad scientist and up and coming HNDP instructor, but for today - he's our beat instructor #1. He goes way-back working alongside HNDP at Self Help Graphics volunteering with Reggie Colman from CalArts with the CAP digital arts program. Boscoes new to music making on an iPad, but quickly became an expert and lead instruction teaching more than 50 people that day how to make their first beat. "It was fun dude, little kids are a trip man, you see them and you know they are going to be somebody". Working with Native Instruments iMaschine we saw parents and kids working together, young adults and the whole community experiencing music production outside.

Bell is a diverse neighborhood filled with awesome artists and community businesses. Mayor Nestor Valencia stopped by to personally thank us for joining the event, but the pleasure was all ours. Thank you South East Los Angeles for having HNDP, enjoy some pictures from the day:
